The choice of stone on this lamp creates a dramatic contrast that highlights its natural beauty, something that’s always Ian’s priority when designing. Thanks to the tactile nature of stone as a material, our lamps are equally pleasing to the touch and to the eye.
Each block of British stone is specially selected to ensure its quality and usability. Then, the oval shapes are hand-worked separately before being bonded together to create vivid shadow. Our lamps are then hand-finished by our award-winning stonemasons, ensuring that you always receive the finest quality of craftsmanship. Finally, the finished stone is hand-honed and sealed to give it a surprisingly warm feel.
We pay acute attention to detail with all of our work, finishing the lamp with a braided cable, complementary antique brass fittings and our own mason’s mark of authentication – a solid bronze coin – set in the back of the base.
Thanks to the nature of stone as a material, subtle variations in the stone and the fabric of the handmade, bespoke, silk shades guarantee that every lamp is unique.
Ancaster Weatherbed is an interesting Jurassic limestone quarried in Lincolnshire, with an attractive regular showing of fossils and shells.
It’s very fine grained with a beautiful warm beige base and blue/brown variations and has been used for sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
Woven from an incredibly luxurious all-natural silk, our lampshades are painstakingly rolled and neatly tucked for a delicately unique finish. The silk shades are produced to display some natural slubbing, adding to their character.
We go to great lengths to combine the subtle variations of each stone with the finish of each lampshade to give the completed lamp a subtle and carefully considered character of its own.

Thank you for your interest. Please complete, if you would like a sample of the stone and/or shade silk.
However, stone is a natural material and variance in texture and colour does occur. At Ian Knapper we take every care to ensure stone consistency, we consider this to be part of the natural beauty of stone, as no one piece will be identical.
The shade material is natural silk douppion. Silk is the most luxurious fibre in the world. The weaving and knitting of the fabric contains minor variations and irregularities. These are characteristics of fine silk yarn which gives the fabric its lustre and texture and should not be treated as defects.
