The choice of stone on this lamp creates a striking contrast that allows the lamp base to highlight the natural beauty of the stone material, something that’s always Ian’s priority when designing. Thanks to the tactile nature of stone material, our lamps are both pleasing to the eyes and to the touch.
Each block of British stone is specially selected by our award-winning stonemasons, then the oval shapes are hand-worked individually before being bonded together to create their vivid shadows. The next step is to hand-finish the lamps to ensure a peak level of quality craftsmanship. Finally, the piece is finished by hand-honing the stone and sealing in its surprisingly warm feel.
We pay great attention to detail in our lamps, which we finish with a braided cable, antique brass fittings and our own mason’s mark of authenticity – a solid bronze coin – set into the back of the base.
Thanks to the nature of working in stone, subtle variations in the stone and fabric of our handmade, bespoke, silk shades ensure that each lamp is unique.
Subtle variations in the stone and the fabric of the handmade, bespoke, silk shades guarantees that every lamp is unique.
Portland Basebed is a consistent white/grey limestone from the Portlandian formation.
Used throughout London buildings for centuries this is the oldest and therefore the cleanest of the Portland beds having very little evidence of fossils.
With its clean and simple beauty, Basebed remains very popular.
Woven from an incredibly luxurious all-natural silk, our lampshades are painstakingly rolled and neatly tucked for a delicately unique finish. The silk shades are produced to display some natural slubbing, adding to their character.
We go to great lengths to combine the subtle variations of each stone with the finish of each lampshade to give the completed lamp a subtle and carefully considered character of its own.
We have paid close attention to detail, finishing the lamp with a braided cable, complementary antique brass fittings and our mason’s mark of authentication—a solid bronze coin—set into the back of the base.
Thank you for your interest. Please complete, if you would like a sample of the stone and/or shade silk.
However, stone is a natural material and variance in texture and colour does occur. At Ian Knapper we take every care to ensure stone consistency, we consider this to be part of the natural beauty of stone, as no one piece will be identical.
The shade material is natural silk douppion. Silk is the most luxurious fibre in the world. The weaving and knitting of the fabric contains minor variations and irregularities. These are characteristics of fine silk yarn which gives the fabric its lustre and texture and should not be treated as defects.
