Cantilever Staircase

From a small workshop in rural Staffordshire, some of the most stunning stone staircases are being designed and installed by the award-winning stonemason Ian Knapper. His unique talent is now in great demand throughout the UK as he focuses on revitalising the art of manufacturing cantilever staircases.

The design and production of cantilevered stone staircases is almost a forgotten art. Initially introduced into the UK in the mid 17th century from Italy, many stonemasons shy away from the engineering complexities involved in creating the illusion of their gravity-defying appearance.

However, the cantilever staircase is a classic design from Ian’s portfolio as featured here. The fantastic ‘flying’ appearance is achieved by setting one end of the stair tread into a wall and their stunning presentation is enhanced by the beauty when viewed from all angles – they look as good from underneath as from on top.
